Geekatana Review - Spies in Disguise - A spy comedy film done with Flying Colors

Spies in Disguise is spy comedy film directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane produced by  Blue Sky Studios and distributed by 20th Century Fox. It is somewhat based on the 2009 animated short Pigeon: Impossible by Lucas Martell.

I was originally going to give this movie a pass since the trailer didn't impress me as much. Safe to say I went into this film with low expectations. Certainly the trailer didn't give this movie justice. Also minor spoilers flag is up just in case.

Spies in Disguise is about a top spy is transformed into a pigeon by accident. As if that wasn't bad enough said spy has enemies that would love to see said spy gone for good. The film stars Will Smith, Tom Holland, Ben Mendelsohn, Rashida Jones, Karen Gillan, Reba McEntire and DJ Khaled.

Storywise the plot is one spy chase and fight scene after the other as Tom Holland and Will Smith try to stay alive long enough to find the bad guy and save the day. The movie pokes fun at other spy movies in general on how the agent always wins the day and has a lot of these cool gadgets at his disposal. It's done all for laugh and done well. There's a scene in the film that reminds me of Hollands latest Sony Spider-man film among other easter eggs.

Sure the plot isn't anything new but the execution is surprisingly well done as the movie is an entertaining ride from beginning to the end. I forgot how many times I laughed at this film thanks to how well the dialogue is done. If you like comedy and you like spy movies than you will definitely find something to love in this movie. Will Smith character hold most of the movie due to his excellent line delivery but Holland is the perfect anti thesis to him and the two play off each other nicely.

Character wise this is Will Smith being what Will Smith does best. being cool and kicking butt. His comedy chops is on point in this one. Holland is the perfect match for him. The banter and situation their character faces are the clearly the best parts of the film. And this isn't just played for laughs as Smith character learns that his solo way of doing things isn't always the right thing to do it. I always laugh whenever Holland character does his best James Bond impression in the movie.

Animation wise this film is nicely done and up to par with the best animated cgi movies available in the market today. You just need to see how well the water effects are done in the trailer to see how much effort they put into rendering this film. Definitely leaps and bounds ahead of Ice Age franchise animation that Blue Sky Studio is widely known for. Music in this film is icing in the cake and it has this sort of James Bond tone to it with a bit of modern touch to it and is a nice add on.

The movie isn't perfect as the plot is pretty basic and the villain isn't really all that threatening but that minor considering how enjoyable the film is. It oozes style and comedy that only the likes of Will Smith can bring. I also wished the film was a bit longer with the other side characters given a lot more time to shine. Also some of the characters feel like your generic typical character cliche played more for laughs than actual relevant character.

Overall the movie is hell of fun to watch. The kids will definitely love this film so bring the little tikes when you have the chance when you see this film. The film is an entertaining roller coaster ride from beginning to end. If your into spy movies and likes a little comedy mix in then you definitely should watch this film. If you want to have a good laugh than this is a film for you. In fact I recommend everyone to watch this film.
