I
came across the anime while browsing the internet and I've been following it
ever since. The final episode has aired recently and I was supposed to do a
review of it a week or two before it ended but never got the time to do it.
Anyways better late than never. Also minor spoilers are in effect.
A novice goddess Ristarte is in charge of saving the world of
Gaeabrande from a Demon Lord by summoning a human hero. An S-class world,
Gaeabrande is extremely dangerous, so Ristarte needs to pick the perfect hero for
the task. She finds Seiya Ryuguin, who has impressive stats. Unfortunately, Seiya
is ridiculously cautious and doesn't trust anyone even Ristarte herself. He refusing
to even enter a fight without super duper prepared and this lead to some
misadventures and crazy scenarios both funny and dangerous.
As a plot this is your typical comedy Isekai anime in the
veins of Konosuba with the clueless goddess and sarcastic and trolling
protagonist. What makes Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly
Cautious stands out is how well its written and how often it breaks the fourth
wall. He is not afraid to call out something or someone stupid when he sees it
and we love Seiya the more for it.
The character are extreme cliche of existing anime
characters. Saiya is brutal and overly frank that it is often borderline
insulting. When he finds an are ugly or weak he will tell it to their faces and
even drop another insult in there for good measure. he is anti social and
extreme and it lead to a lot of comedic and funny moments. Ristarte over
optimism and exaggerated reactions compliments him as well as the other cookie
crazy characters in the series.
The animation is decent to somewhat impressive but nothing
that hasn't been done before. But the shows fun is from its plot and characters
and well written dialogues more than its visual. It won't win the best anime of
the year but it sure will find a lot of love from those who love Isekai and comedy
fantasy anime and the likes. The cgi isn't as great but you tend to ignore it
since your more focused on what the characters will do next. Some of the scenes
and characters felt rashly drawn.
The show jumps into one evil villain to the next with very
little in term of character development. One episode the character is level 10
the next he is level 60+ there is barely little time to breath specially since
it uses a lot of time jump between boss fights but you get used to it after the
few first episode.
The series is not perfect as there's very little character
development at the beginning of the series and just put the viewer into one
crazy boss fight and funny situation after the other. There's no training
montage or lengthy back story either it just hopes the viewer is used to the
Isekai and genre enough to understand the plot or the characters. Thankfully
the character dont feel like plot devices as the story gives enough hint before
the big fight like Seiya learning a certain crafting skill at the beginning of
the episode before revealing that he spend a few days using said skill to
develop an OP weapon for the next fight.
The show isn't perfect though as some narratives felt rushed
and would have benefited for a longer narrative. Some characters felt forced
and feeling like plot devices to get the story from one point to another.
Due to Saiya's over cautious nature a lot of the characters did not have enough
time to shine on their own. Some redemption arc that felt unsatisfying to say
the least.
Overall if you like comedic and entertaining Isekai series
set in a fantasy world this is definitely a must watch series. The show could
probably be better but what they got is surprisingly decent and entertaining enough
for nearly anyone except for the most picky critic. If you're not into Isekai
and want to get into the series then this is a series that I could recommend
for you since it has a decent mix of plot, drama, comedy and fantasy. A must
watch for any anime fan.
