And
as expected just like most Overlord season this one will be a 13 episode run and
will cover much of the later part of the visual novel. Also spoilers flag is up
just in case.
With
Momongga little experimental war on the city of Re-Estize coming to a close our
skeleton little ruler finally decides to make his presence known in this new
world. If at first he sets his eyes on one city this time Ainz and his Guardians
have bigger things in mind nothing short of world domination. Regrettably
things isn't going to be smooth sailing as the Empire has other plans as well.
Storywise
overlord II is probably the darkest the series has gotten. Those who followed
the franchise knew this would happen eventually but this season was a clear
nose dive down the deep end. We all probably know momongga will embrace the
dark side but certainly not this. Our favorite skeletal darklord always has a
deep reason on why he does why he does but this season throws pretty much all
of that out the window.
The
story sadly moves very slow and doesn't pick up until halfway throughout the
third season. The first half focusing on that small village Ainz sort of
rescued during the first season. Focusing on the character surprisingly I've
nearly forgotten existed in this franchise. The first part starting out slow
dipping into some sort of a cute romcon until everything it crashes into murder
and blood. Personally they should have focused more on a certain powerful loli
mage from the second season and I wouldn't have mind at all. Instead we get a
story arc that feels a lot like fillers on a second half that barely moves the
overall plot along.
Sure
it's probably world building and what not but most of the time you wish you
could just skip certain scenes until you get to the exciting parts. The cgi feels
off and its right in your face most of the time specially during the last half
of the third season. Personally I don't mind it but they did it far more than
any of the previous two seasons ever did.
Unlike
the two seasons before it Overlord III is far darker than the two that came
before it as Ainz barely have any forgiving bone on his body and will eliminate
anyone who crosses him regardless if they stole a million gold or just a single
gold coin. One would think this season took major pointers from Game of Thrones
or Dark Souls on how the third season went.
As
a whole Overlord III is still an enjoyable series despite how darker it has
become. The cgi needs a lot of improvement but won't take away much from the
whole experience. The pacing does takes its time to get good but when it does
it doesn't have any breaks and will certainly get fans of the series hooked.
You do need to watch the previous two season to fully enjoy this.
