Hobbs and Shaw Trailer Reaction

I haven't really watch every Fast and the Furious film that rolled out of theaters but even I have to admit that the franchise was thoroughly entertaining. Sure it has some elements that defy logic and reason in exchange for over the top action scenes. Most notable the usual argument of "That's not how cars work" here and there.

I thought the franchise was still on hiatus with the lost of its lead actor Paul Walker so imagine my surprise when this movie trailer dropped. It peaked my interest so much that I have to make a trailer breakdown of it. So let's break the trailer down shall we.

For those familiar with fast and the Furious franchise its more about fast cars, high stakes and family which eventually developed into movies about cars, more high stakes, family, over the top action and more over the top action. It's one of those movies you just turn off the logic part of your brain and just enjoy it for what it is.

Usually staring Paul Walker and Vin Diesel as the main characters but later introduced a lot of actors who are no stranger to action genre like Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham who has become somewhat regulars as well to the franchise with Dwayne playing the massive lawman and Jason character playing the anti hero he is known for.

From what we know so far is that this new film will be a stand-alone movie set in the fast and Furious universe. Most likely sometime around or after the eight film of the franchise where Hobbs and Shaw must team up to take down a genetically enhanced anarchist named Brixton played by Idris Elba known for his role in the first Pacific Rim film. Specially since Brixton suddenly gains control of a bio weapon that can change humanity.

Hobbs and Shaw first duke it out during Furious 7 movie back in 2015 and have become fan favorites since they can exchange insults as well as hits with each other nearly as much as Hobbs and Diesel's character do. The trailer does show this dynamic well as both can take names and dish out a world of hurt.

This time it's going to take both of them together to take Idris Elba who thanks to his workout routine looks as beefy as Hobbs but is as slick as Shaw in a fight. Brixton for lack of a better world is probably the Fast and the Furious franchise version of Captain America at this point judging by the trailer. Not sure about the idea of Brixton is bulletproof is real since its not really shown.

The trailer also sees Vanessa Kirby character as an M16 agent an agency that Brixton seem to be a part of before he went rogue and bad guy. Kirby character also happens to be Shaw's sister so there's that dynamic there. She does have a convincing expression when she looks at the camera but her movement seems a bit sluggish for someone who is an M16 agent.

What I like about the trailer is we get to see a lot of action from across the world from London, Los Angeles and even Russia and Samoa. I love how they are still jumping vehicles out of the windows of tall building which is sort of a running gag for the franchise at his point. I just hope they haven't shown all the best scenes yet but what we got was promising of a good action flick this will be be.

I like how the trailer embraces its James Bond-ish Mission Impossible side of Fast and the Furious while at the same time being doing its own thing. I had my doubts if a spin off of the franchise will work considering Walker character was such a beloved piece of the franchise but so far the action is good and the back and forth banter between Hobbs and Shaw is always nice.

Its directed by David Leitch known for his work on Deadpool 2 from a script by Chris Morgan who has been known for his extensive writing on the Fast and the Furious films. With these two at it I think the film is going to be another blockbuster hit. Not sure its ready to take on the heavy hitters of the Marvel and Disney but the franchise is a consistent favorite of fans.

If all goes well the film will hit theaters in August 2. 2019.
