Geekatana Movie Review: The LEGO Movie (2014)

A lot of unsuspected stuff is happening around me lately that I'm really running short on all these review but before I delve into reviewing the second LEGO movie I'd decided to make a review of the first one since its way over due for a review at this point.

I like to add that although I'm a fan of minifig I haven't watched every LEGO film out there and this is probably my first review of a LEGO film to date. I just like to put that out there before I delve into this review.

The LEGO movie is about Emmet who is an ordinary LEGO construction worker in this LEGO world that is said to be the prophesied as this sort of "special", who will rid the world of an evil tyrant bent on some world ending domination thingie as far as LEGO goes.

As far as story goes it was pretty decent despite the cliche overused theme and good versus evil storyline due to the abundance of toy and LEGO related puns and characters that appear on screen. This film had nearly every LEGO related toy they can get in the big screen that the entire film was a big easter egg LEGO culture reference galore.

The story has a lot of morals to it about believing in yourself and never giving up despite how hopeless things get which surprisingly works for this film. And surprisingly despite the over abundance of LEGO character each has their distinct personality and voices that it's easy to tell them apart. LEGO Batman is LEGO Batman, Superman is Superman and so forth.

The thing that makes this work are the characters as each and everyone is funny and likable right down to the side characters. The jokes and the puns are funny although not all of them landed for me. Also this film has some really dark parts that the movie got away with simply cause they used LEGO bricks that Im not sure are for kids.

The voice acting for the LEGO characters is excellent from Chris Pratt to Morgan Freeman. Each one a near perfect performance that gave life to these characters. Although admittedly this film wouldn't be half as enjoyable without Will Arnett's batman as he has half of the best lines and scenes in the film itself.

The action sequences are nice although hard to follow at certain parts that you need a pause button just to see it clearly since at times its all just colored bricks clashing into each other. The songs are nice although the song "Everything is Awesome" does get a tad bit over used at one point.

There are human scenes in this film that you know is a page out of a Toy Story concept that despite being the line that holds everything together didn't work for me due to bad camera angle or bad dialogue and line delivery which tanked the experience for me as I find these human scenes the lowest parts of the film.

The visuals and the effects are rich with the movie exploring the different theme LEGO had over the years from its western to its medieval line. Sure the film is definitely a marketing ploy to sell more LEGO but it was a fun and entertaining marketing ploy of a movie that was worth every price of admission. Kind of what LEGO is.

The LEGO Movie is a thoroughly entertaining film although bogged down by its weak human scenes. The characters are fun and memorable due to its exceptionally good voice casting. A movie designed for kids but has enough heart for adults as well. If you love LEGO you will surely enjoy this film. This is a solid film I'd easily recommend to anyone as its both entertaining and well written.
