Geekatana Anime Review: Myriad Color Phantom World

It's been a while since I made an anime review so I've decided to make a quick one. And for this one I've decided to make a review of Myriad Colors Phantom World or Musaigen no Phantom World as it's known in Japan. This one is done by Kyoto Animations the company responsible for such series like The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad and FullMetal panic? Fumoffu among others.

I'm a big fan of Kyoto Animations since Full Metal Fumoffu is one of my favorite series and is still is to this day. This series was recommended to me by a friend years back and its sad that it's just now I got around to making this review.

Myriad Colors Phantom World is basically an anime's version of the Ghostbusters while still keeping a lot of elements making it their own. In this series a virus has spread around the world changing their brain chemistry allowing all humans to see phantoms.

Kids born from this outbreak have developed abilities to combat these phantoms. And this is where Haruhiko and his group comes in as one of those group of kids assigned for the task.

The concept of Myriad Color Phantom World is great if only it had a decent story to back it up. Sadly this story drives along the line of comedy and fanservice than actual storytelling. if you've seen Highschool DxD, Zero no Tsukaima than you got a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about.

Each characters are well designed as you would expect from Kyoto Animation. Sadly as unique each of the characters are the series goes into comedy and fan service territory instead of fleshing out these characters. This is a series that has a girl that can eat phantoms and one that uses elemental powers to augment her martial arts skill too.

What this series lack in the story development it makes up for in quality artwork and animations. The action sequences are breathtaking and extremely well animated something Kyoto Animation is well known for and it shows. In fact the series could have been pure 90% action and I'll probably be ok with it. Some episodes just feels like fillers. There's also an episode about Mai and a limbo rope that I felt was a waste of time even for fan service purposes.

Don't get me wrong I don't hate this series I actually really enjoyed it. The comedy was funny the fan service isn't forced and I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh so hard when Haruhiko was kicked out of the window of the dorm for running into the girls bath...twice. It's a fun series if you just want a fun anime with the bare minimum in story plots. The series clearly knows it's cliche and just embraces and has fun with it and it shows.

Sadly the series is only one season and covers only half of Volume 1 of the 3 Volume Light Novel which is a shame since theres a rumor of Phantoms becoming more dangerous in later volumes and people being forced underground to survive.

There's also that buzz that Haruhiko is somehow going to lose his powers later in the story and that he will sell his soul to get them back. Also a new more dangerous antagonist will appear more powerful than what they have shown in the latter half of the anime. How great this series could have been if given another season I wonder.

Myriad Colors Phantom World was a good anime if your into comedy with enough action and fan service for those that need it. The action scenes and the comedy is pretty good but still lacks in some areas for my taste. If you like comedy action anime with fanservice like Highschool DxD and the likes then this anime is probably for you.
