Geekatana Anime Review: Blood+

I'll admit that I'm a sucker (<--pun intended) for vampires. Sadly not every vampire related medium landed for me regardless. Specially not the movie Twilight and specially not Blood the Last Vampire, that vampire anime movie that came out back in the year 2000. I guess I'm very picky when it comes to getting my vampire fix.

So why am I now reviewing the anime Blood+ which is a vampire anime based on, if not the continuation of the animated movie Blood the Last vampire of all things. Well let's just say even a broken clock is right at least two times in a day.

The main protagonist of Blood+ is Saya Otonashi a seemingly normal girl with amnesia but in actuality hides a dark past. Sure the base premise is cliche from the get go but that is the only thing bad about it as the anime surprisingly excels in everything else.

If you want a vampire series with an actual plot and zero filler episodes then you're in the right place. It's a feat too considering this series has around 50 episodes in total from beginning to end.

Blood + has excellent character development not only from Saya but from all the characters around her. Each one has their own back story and knowing each of them as the story flows adds more weight to the main story and gives the viewers an idea why these characters do what they do. Yes you will even feel sympathy or at least an understanding to the villains in this series as the you dive more into this.

The cinematography and animation still holds up to this day with beautifully rendered characters and backgrounds. The action is tight and none confusing so viewers will easily know what's going on.

The tone and atmosphere blends itself perfectly with every scene that it feels like you're actually watching an animated movie rather than an animated series. It even has cgi thrown in as well.

The music of Blood+ is one of the best in the genre as each scene is accompanied with the right amount of background music. It's background music scary when it needs to be, its fast or serious when it calls for it.

Whoever is in charge of mixing the music outdid itself on this series. Something very rarely found in anime these days.

This series hits on a lot of theme without destroying the overall plot of the story. It has comedy, romance, drama, tragedy, action, redemption, revenge and horror without the main plot being all over the place. It's an achievement considering this series isn't a episode by episode series like Hell Girl.

As closure Blood+ is probably one of the best vampire anime series that is still very rarely surpassed to this day. It has the near flawless mix of storytelling, plot twist, character development, music and action and drama. I'd easily recommend this to any fans of the genre or for anyone looking for an anime series with a lot more depth than anime with over the top action and cookie cutter villains. This series gets very easy near perfect score in my book.
