My Top 12 Underrated Anime Opening

This would be my Top 12 Underrated Anime Opening. Why Top 12? Well there's literary a ton of underrated anime out there that making a simple Top 10 feels like a disservice at one point or another. As any Underrated list goes these are anime openings that I feel needed more recognition than it deserved. For this list I'll only be doing one anime per series to narrow it down. Also this is Underrated Anime Opening and not Top 12 Most Underrated Anime which is this list here and is another list altogether.

I like to point out that these are just the underrated anime opening that I know and I'm sure a lot of you could probably add more to this one. So please don't pull a nerve if your Underrated anime didn't make the list.

12 - Cross Ange Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo - Kindan no Resistance

At number 12 is the opening of Cross Ange - Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo which is Kindan no Resistance which translates as Forbidden Resistance in english. It was sung by no other than Nana Mizuki which a lot of otaku fans will remember as the voice behind Hinata and Fate from Naruto and Nonoha respectively. From the amazing violin solo this opening is great from beginning to end.

11 - Hundreds - BloodRed

Next on the list is Hundreds opening entitled BloodRed which was performed by NightCore.  It's a combination of mostly japanese lyrics and some english thrown in here and there. A combination or orchestraic voices and a beat it feels like a war anthem. The anime series might not be much but the anime opening sure is certainly something else.

10 - Gun X Sword - GUNXSWORD

Landing at Top 10 is Gun x Sword which is also the title of the anime it is from. Done by Kotaro Nakagawa which is better known for several anime and kamen rider music. GunXSWORD is a masterful mix of instrument with a sci fi western feel. This is a prime example that you sometime don't need a lot of lyrics to make an awesome anime opening. The anime opening was also unique as the character are shown as silhouettes and are slowly revealed one by one as they are shown as the series goes along.

8 - Jinki Extend - Fly Away

At number eight I put the opening of Jinki Extend theme Fly Away by Unicorn Table that was performed once again by Angela. The name Jinki means man machine. The opening is catchy and has a playful catchy tone to it. And as the title suggest you do feel like flying high in search for adventure. The opening is also notorious for copying the concept opening of Mobile Suit Gundam (1979) right to nearly the last detail but switching the Jinki series characters for the gundam ones.

7 - Tears to Tiara - Free and Dream

The opening theme of the anime based on an adult tactical fantasy role playing game developed by Leaf. The opening was sung by Suara. The song was released by King Records and Bandai Visual. The opening was both thrilling and touching at the same time. If anything the anime is a step up both in sound and visual from the original source.

6 - Shinkon gattai Godannar

The typical homage opening of Godannar is what you would call a tribute to the giant mecha anime of the 80's right from the hyper realistic visual and the upbeat instruments typical of the 80's. The opening was done by Michiaka Watanabe known for his work on Mazinger Z.

5 - Black Lagoon - Red Fraction

Rounding up the number 5 spot is the opening theme of the anime Black Lagoon which is Red Fraction by MELL. The electric guitar opening and MELL singing voice is an adrenaline pumping experience. The anime Black Lagoon is a gun blazing and explosion of filed series and the song Red Fraction fits it so perfectly. Its a mix of english and japanese lyrics worthy of an action Hollywood blockbuster.

4 - Black Bullet - Black Bullet

The opening of an anime with the same name. Black Bullet was done by the group Frip Side. The opening has an orchestra like execution to it that will surely catch anyone but the most picky of anime lovers. The series this was used may not live up to the hype this opening seem to show but very few can deny how well made the opening is.

3 - Darker than Black - Howling

Coming in at number three is the opening theme of Darker than Black Howling. The mix of techno and electronic guitar fits the cloak and dagger theme of Darker than Black. Done by none other than the Abingdon Boy School with Takanori Nishikawa its lead singer. Takanori has worked on a lot of anime themes including GTO, Soul Eater and Gundam Seed.

2 - Blood+ Aozora no Namida

Landing in at second place is the first opening of Blood+ entitled Aozori no Namida. Powerful visuals with even more powerful lyrics the opening song was done by Hitomi Takahashi and captures what the series was all about. Its haunting and powerful and the lyrics fits the vampire redemption perfectly. Not bad for the very first opening theme of an anime series based from the movie Blood the Last Vampire.

1 - Pumpkin Scissor - Aoki Flamme

And finally at number one for me is the opening theme of the anime Pumpkin Scissors. This song was sung by no other than Yoko Takahashi herself. The same voice responsible for the opening theme of Evangelion. Still not as well known as her other works Aoki Flamme still is an underrated masterpiece Epic, emotional and operatic. Nuff said. The visual and the opening music of Pumpkin Scissor blends well on how powerful and somewhat tragic war can be.

What's your favorite Underrated anime opening?
