Arknights - the Anime Waifu Collector Tower Defense Game

Arknights is Yostar Limited mobile game company jab at the Tower defense genre But it takes it on its own route by adding its own touch. For those unfamiliar with Yoster Limited they are the company who are responsible for game Azur Lane back in 2018. Developed by Studio Montagne and Hypergryph under the Yostar game brand, Aknight was first released back in May 2019 but was met with positive feedback that it was launch globally by January 2020.

I'm not a fan of Tower Defense game but I am a big fan of Azur Lane so I decided to finally cave in and gave Arknight a chance. Although admittedly I'm not a hardcore player of Arknights I do enjoy how they handled the whole Tower Defense game and gave it their own twist.

In the game you take the persona of the "Doctor" a person woken up from cryogenic sleep to lead a group operative in a sort of dystopian post apocalypse future. In the world of Arknights world magic and technology thrive and the world inhabitants are show features of mythological and animalistic traits. Harsh climates and natural disasters have left the world in a state of chaos however and its here where you will lead the Rhodes Islands group as you try to save the world from the grip of chaos.

Storywise it is the typical post apocalype dystopian set up but it is deep and engaging enough that you actually feel compelled to see the story through as you crawl and device your tower defense to get to the next part of the story. very few Tower Defense game has ever had an engaging plot wrapped around it. It's like what if Blade Runner was an anime sort of feel to it but instead of cyborgs you get Terra folks with magical abilities.

Gameplay it's your typical Tower defense but with more anime and RPG elements in it. Getting through a stage requires you to level up the characters you have and positioning them correctly in the map. Specialize characters make some of these stages easier but the game is surprisingly F2P friendly that you can get through most of the stages with just the basic operators that you can get for Free in the game itself.

Of course you still need to level up said character and skills of said operators to meet certain level difficulty but nothing you cannot handle with a few weeks of grinding. There's also plenty of things to do aside from story like maintaining your base for the steady supply of gold and materials and doing weekly mission runs. There is plenty to do that it can be overwhelming at times.

Character wise this is an anime waifu defense tower game with nearly all of the operators and characters in the game mostly females. Each with their own unique and colorful designs that adds to the feel and fantasy of the entire game. Collecting the most powerful operator takes a bit of luck. And with nearly new characters popping out every event players will no doubt have their hands full most of the time.

The game isn't without its bad sides however as some of the interface needs a more extensive tutorial as some of the interface are not explained that well that I found myself looking at the internet for game guidelines just to check on how to do things like expanding your base of operation just to name one.

Also the game can be overwhelming at times and the auto function feels it takes forever to finish even at 2x speed setting grinding on a stage just so you can get that certain material you need to upgrade your operators. There certainly should be a faster way to do it I think. Like maybe an actual skip function so that players can actually move on to the real stages that needs time and attention. But in the end that is a minor complain to how well the game is.

Overall if you are into anime and Tower Defense game than this is a game you should definitely try. If you are planning to get into the whole Tower Defense genre than Arknights is a decent starting point. Arknights is very friendly to beginners and the whole dystopian apocalypse anime plot is a nice touch. A must try for any mobile gamer whether you are a fan of anime style mobile games.
