Geekatana Movie Review: Toy Story 4

Toy Story didn't need a fourth film and I think a lot of folks would agree that all the three movies should be left alone as it is. No offense to Pixar and Disney but having a fourth film of Toy Story is pretty much milking the franchise already. Toy Story 1 to 3 was already the complete package. It started out strong, it had a great build up and it ended in a very fitting big finale very few movie trilogy can ever accomplished.

You could tell I have a lot of doubts for this film since this movie came out of nowhere and I doubt the fans was pushing for a fourth one. The trailer only made it worst since the trailer mirrors pretty much what the first Toy Story was almost beat by beat.

The story is about a new toy named "forky" who triggers a series of events during a road trip that causes a whole ton of adventures. Along the way they meet up with new and old toys as they find out how big the world really is for toys outside the toy box. A big big world.

Don't let the trailer fool you on this one as the movie is so much more than what they show. I went to this movie with low expectations and was surprisingly blown away on how good it is. In fact this is probably on par with Toy Story 3 in terms of plot, story and emotional depth. Seriously if you don't feel anything after watching this film then you're probably never had a childhood life.

The visuals was amazing. It has gone from 3D animated to near photo realistic quality. if you ever seen the trailer of Frozen 2 and noticed the waves that's how good the visuals are in this movie. The water, the rain, the reflection, the lights everything felt like it was really there. hats off to the folks at Pixar and Disney for pushing the boundaries of animations and cinematography once again. The director Josh Cooley's really did amazing work directing this film. And this was his first full length animated film I think.

The added characters of Keanu Reeve's as Duke Kaboom is refreshing. Duke along with the new characters Bunny and Ducky played by Keegan and Peele which are the stuff toys you see in the trailers are my personal favorites. Their scene always makes me laugh in whatever situation they find themselves into. The emotion baggage was there specially delivered by Tom Hanks character Woody who is the long staple for Toy Story movies along with Buzz.

Toy Story 4 probably has one of the best antagonist in any Toy Story film to date too. You can always have movie villains but when you get a villain you can actually sympathize with and understand that's when things get good. The villain in Toy Story 4 did this far more than Lotso did in Toy Story 3.

Kind of wished it's a tad bit longer as this movie introduced a lot of character who are mostly there for a few minutes. Also a lot of the main cast of the first three films didn't get enough time to shine this time around but I guess the film wanted to concentrate on the newer characters more. A lot of the punchline landed for me despite how obvious some of them are.

Sure the movie does feel episodic at times and you can feel the folks at Disney and Pixar are really milking the franchise for what it is but if all their next movie is this good story and animation wise I wouldn't mind paying for it. This was really a movie ticket well spent. And I wouldn't mind seeing this movie a few more times if given the chance.

The music was ok for the most part although not as memorable as the first three film was but it was enough to convey the emotion it was trying to get across. Also some of the scenes are probably too scary for little kids so it's good to have an adult or parent present just in case.

Overall Toy Story 4 is a movie that nobody expected but still delivered on all the things that made Toy Story films great. The film does put most of the characters in the first three films at the back seat to give room for the new ones. It was humorous, refreshing and heartfelt and had a well rounded antagonist you can sympathize. If you ever watched a Toy Story film or is a fan of the franchise then I couldn't recommend this movie more.
