Geekatana Movie Review: How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

I was supposed to do a review of the Grinch (2018) but decided to put it off a bit to re-watch the How the Grinch Stole Christmas just to have a better view of how the two plays out if compared to each other.

If you want to see what my feelings and thoughts about the How the Grinch Stole Christmas movie than read if not you can just jump into my review of the new movie.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas fantasy christmas comedy film directed by Ron Howard and written by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman. The film stars Jim Carrey in the title role as the Grinch It is based on Dr. Seuss's 1957 book of the same name, the film was the first Dr. Seuss book to be adapted into film.

Since the entire film is based on a children christmas picture book there's been a lot of addition to the story to make it longer including the back story of the Grinch himself. Just like the small town of Whoville is found inside a christmas snowflake

Sadly it's also due to this that the citizens Whovilles have been given a bigger role in the film than that of the picture book seem to be implying making them more of the villain of the film rather than just some folks who just loves christmas and singing in the original source material.

Its a different bold direction from the book and Jim Carrey portrays the Grinch in his own colorful funny way. Although there's a few adult humors and scenes in the film that is clearly not for young kids. He is clearly the actor that made this movie work. Nearly every scene Carrey/Grinch was in is the best parts of the film. he even sings You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch which is a staple song of the Grinch persona.

Visually the movie is impressive and I wouldn't imagine how much time it took for Jim Carrey to get into that Grinch costume. Sadly being Jim Carrey I can't help but see the Mask in the Grinch character in the film and the green fur of the grumpy guy doesn't help change my mind either.

The movie is quite entertaining although I think a bit dark than what the original picture book or cartoon seem to be going for.  How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a good film and if folks can get past the adult humor in the film. Young adults and teenagers will most likely enjoy this for Jim Carreys performance.

Overall the film is good although I wouldn't let young kids watch this without adult supervision. The dull side characters does tank this film a bit. The Grinch/Jim Carrey's performance is the only good thing in the film as the characters in the film feels flat and dull.
