Geekatana Movie Review: Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck It Ralph 2

With the Wreck It Ralph review done its time to go into the 2012 movie sequel and that's the new Ralph Breaks the Internet film. If this review or the one before it feels rushed that's cause it is. But that being said I'll try to go into detail on what I like and don't like about the new film without giving away spoilers. Wreck It Ralph is one of my favorite video game movies of recent memory since it managed to do a lot of stuff most other video game related movies have failed.

Video game based movies of that past that are originally decent like Mortal Kombat sadly failed in its sequel. So yes I'm a bit nervous going into this new film.

Taking place six years after the first movie, the Sugar Rush arcade cabinet has broken thus forcing Ralph and Vanellope to travel to the Internet via the newly-installed Wi-Fi router in Litwak's Arcade to retrieve the piece capable of saving the game.

The story of the film was serviceable although I do feel it tried to do too much since I feel there are three underlying crisis that the film and characters try to show but barely did a decent enough job of giving proper closure in each of them. The plot feels a bit rushed in a lot of areas. if the first film feels like Ralphs story this one is more of Vanelloppes as it is Ralphs.

Some scenes could have been shorter while some scenes should have been given more time to develop or play out like in particular the Slaughter Race scenes where I was expecting more friction and more of a rivalry arc between Veneloppe and Gal Gadot's character Shank. Also I feel some of the other side characters should have also given more screen time.

The third act didn't deliver as much impact as it was supposed to making it seem like a plot device ending than one that actually gave the movie closure. The movie was good but I still feel the first film is slightly more better story wise.

I do feel as grand as the film wanted to be the villain in this film feels weak specially in the third act of the film as I do feel they could have done something more better to end the climax of the movie. You will see what I mean when you go see it.

The visual are a great improvement specially in the Slaughter Race areas although not so much in my opinion since the first Wreck It Ralph film has pretty much the same visual art style. The music they use is nice but not as memorable as the first film as well.

The film seem to cram so much Disney, Marvel, Starwars and Pixar stuff in there not to mention a whole lot of internet stuff that you barely notice a lot of them since the story breezes so fast that you probably need a pause button in your movie seat.

For those expecting a cameo there is a lot in terms of internet and Disney. One Marvel cameo in particular you need to watch out for when Vanelloppe is running away from those stormtroopers you see in the trailer that I recommend you watch out for since it happens so fast you can easily miss it. Also there are a mid credit scene and an after credit scene in this film so be sure to stay at the very end to see them.

Ralph Breaks the Internet is a good sequel to the first film but falls short slightly in terms of story and plot structure as it tries to juggle three different plots simultaneously. If your a fan of the first Wreck It Ralph I'm sure you will find something here to enjoy. I'll give it the same score I gave the first film despite me feeling the first one was still better.
