Geekatana Movie Review: The Grinch

With the review of How the Grinch Stole Christmas done its time to jump into the latest movie adaptation of the Grinch. If you're interested on reading my review on How the Grinch Stole Christmas than just follow the link here.

Also seeing the Grinch in 3D is a nice change of pace and I'm interested on how they would execute it on film as compared to the 2000 version with Jim Carrey and the animated cartoon itself.

The Grinch is another classic retelling of Dr. Seuss this time by Illumination studio, the studio responsible for the Despicable Me series. This is the second animated film of a Dr. Seuss done by Illumination, the other being the Lorax (2012).

The structure of the latest film is clearly a lot more kid friendly take on the well loved Dr. Seuss story although doesn't add much that makes it stand out from those that came before it. It's a good film for the younger kids with none of the more mature aspect the live action version film had.

The animation was great with the Grinch having a more less frightening look to it that will surely delight kids as Benedict Cumberback makes a good lovable performance voicing the character that is far from the Dr. Strange persona most folks associates him with these days.

I like how the Whoville folks are more friendly in this one compared to the live action film where and a lot more human like looking than they are in the live action 2000 film. They are just folks who are really, really into christmas.

The story of Cindy Lou involving Santa is nice but I don't think was really needed in the film and the three scenes where she and her Whoville friends discuss said plot is clearly just there to make the movie longer which sadly they could have used in other scenes.

Some scenes could have been longer for me like the ones where the Grinch put together all his plans on stealing christmas instead we get a plot about Cindy Lou Who and her mom and siblings which could have been done shorter and better.

Also as much as I enjoyed the film its a bit too safe for me and doesn't take the risk of doing something that would make it stand out against the crowd of christmas animated films that has been made before it and this is another one of the movies down side for me. They could have gone all out with a bang but didn't.

The film is definitely made for kids and they will definitely love this film as I heard some kids laughing inside the theater. The Whoville folks are more likable and some of them even stands like that bearded guy with the inflatable decoration was my favorite.

The Grinch is a lighthearted version and is undoubtedly more steered towards younger kids. The third act of the film where the Grinch is clearly the best part of the film in this one but done expect anything new as the tale of the Grinch being told so many times every christmas theres very little new to look forward to

Overall the movie was a decent film that kids and young adults will enjoy although it doesn't have anything new to offer aside from the usual slapstick jokes, comedy and a story thats been told many times. It's an ok film if you have money and time to burn at the theaters. Certainly a good film for the kids.
