Geekatana Movie Review: Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the most iconic song of the band Queen. I've probably remember this song as far back as I can remember yet despite loving their music I wasn't hyped about seeing this film specially not on the big screen. Watching a concert is one thing but watching about a movie about the band that made the songs is another thing. It's just not my cup of tea.

Yet despite this I did accompany my sister in watching this film and you can imagine I was really very skeptical if the movie will be good or not. Movies about the life of famous people usually tend to be bad and hearing the movie was more than two hours long isn't exactly helping either.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a chronological tale of the band Queen from their beginnings to the early seventies right down to the eighties from their simple beginnings to the ups and downs that the band went through the years up to their concert appearance at Live Aid (1985).

As story plot goes the movie was mostly about Freddie Mercury. His humble beginnings and the trails and controversies that surrounded the band during their years. It does most of the crucial aspect in the bands history but the movie barely dives down into the darker aspect of the bands history but sugarcoats a lot of these issues. Its serious, it's funny, it's emotional and heartwarming at the same time.

While the movie may sound like a lighthearted tale of the band it does have its darker aspect here and there in its more than two hour run. The change of tone is probably changes to the script as the film was originally supposed to have a more darker theme to it. Certain scenes and dialogues might have been tweaked but it still feels like a good solid movie, Things like the question about his relationship and sexuality which was touched upon but was never really deeply explored.

The cinematography of the film is nearly flawless as the film captures the trend, fashion and feel of the seventies and eighties in the costume. The re enactment of the Live Aid scene in the trailer is already an indication on how well they have worked on the costume, design sets itself. In fact that Live Aid scene is already worth the price of admission for me.

The casting of Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury was a match made in heaven. He nailed the Freddie Mercury persona perfectly right down to his body movement and mannerism. I wouldn't be surprised if he wins an award for his performance here yet again. The supporting cast was also good on their own as well.

The music is superb and plays well to set the tone on certain scenes in the film. Although a lot of my favorite songs didn't make it to the movies there's already plenty to go through for those familiar with their songs. And despite the abundant of songs it doesn't overwhelm the films plot something rarely done in movies of this kind right.

Overall the movie Bohemian Rhapsody is a great film and an easy recommendation to anyone who loves the band and their songs. Despite this film barely touching the darker aspect of the bands history it does an excellent work on everything else. This is a movie I'd easily watch again if given a chance and an easy perfect score for me.
