Since
I've done a horror anime and horror movie theme review guess I'd go round it
all up and make a horror game review before Halloween month ends. Sure I could
have a ton of games I can think of that could easily make this review but I've
decided to make one of BloodRayne 2 since its been on my to-do-list for a while
now.
Im
a fan of Terminal Reality games since they released the game Nocturne for the
PC but for me Blood Rayne 2 is their crowning achievement as far as horror
games go. Sure fans of Starwars Kinect and Ghostbusters the Video Game would
easily prove me wrong but as the saying goes you never forget your first love.
Also this game is pretty violent so if you're not into these things I suggest
not to read any further.
BloodRayne
2 is an indirect sequel to the first game as this one takes place a good
seventy years after the events of the first game. So no more Nazi and has a
more modern vibe to it. And with no Nazi to hunt BloodRayne 2 sets the sexy half vampire and half
human Rayne is busy killing off her vampire siblings after dispatching the vampire Kegan the vampire leader responsible for the death of her family a few years
earlier. But her vampire siblings have their own plans too and nothing short of turning whole mankind into an eat all you can buffet through their evil experiment called the "Shroud".
In
terms of graphics BloodRayne 2 greatly improves from the first original game with
better texture, detail and lighting effects. Unlike most horror games enemies when
you kill or in this case mostly decapitated enemies they won't disappear so you
can enjoy feasting your eyes on the blood, gore and more blood and gore as you
go through each stage. This makes for a far more realistic gameplay and really
sets the tone for the game.
Here's
some gameplay video of BloodRayne 2 as reference.
The
character design and the bosses are impressive with each with their own quirks,
abilities and personalities. They make the plot of the game feel complete as
each has their own motivations and agendas. Revenge and betrayal run a plenty
in this game as well as the blood and gore Rayne leaves on her path to revenge.
Gameplay
is a great improvement from the original game since Rayne can now use her harpoon weapon in
other fashion like flinging enemies to activate switches and objects to open
pathways. There's also the acrobatic areas you need to swing through in order
to continue in the game. If you seen or played Prince of Persia Sands of Time you
will know some similarities here. There's also some pole grinding mechanics usually seen in those skating games.
Gathering
weapons and breaking boxes and collecting ammo is gone however since your given
a weapon that uses blood as a sort of ammo so players will need to feed said
weapon in order to sue it effectively. Rayne also has some skills she can
unlock from defeating the different bosses in the game. It doesn't help that
the enemies tend to look and act the same and feels like a grind just going through
them.
As
good as the other aspect of the game Bloodrayne 2 does have some clipping
issues you will encounter in the course of gameplay and some hidden pathways
are hard to find due to certain walkways blending in into the background but
nothing too serious a little careful exploration won't solve.
A lot of the
areas are designed in an odd way simply so Rayne could have some bars or pole
she can swing on to. Also the blood and gore is a bit too much for certain
people.
The
game isn't perfect as BloodRayne 2 new weapon mechanics defeats the purpose of
breaking crates and hunting for ammo plus the enemies are too easy compared to
the first game and just gang up on you for most of the entire game.
Most of the
time they are just there so that your character has something to fling at a
switch or object in order to advance to the next level or just there to refill
your weapon of blood ammo.
