Geekatana Anime Review: Hundred

Hundred is one of those anime that despite the title has nothing to do with math. It was recommended to me by a friend who is also an avid anime watcher. I clearly have no idea what to expect when diving into this one and I didn't even know such a series existed but then again I'm not the most up to date when it comes to anime series.

I read somewhere on the internet that this series feels a lot like Infinity Stratos. I still haven't watched Infinity Stratos so I won't hold the anime Hundred against it and will judge this anime based on its merit and comparing it to other anime that I'm more familiar with.

In this series Hundred is the name of some technological weapon that is the only thing capable of fighting off alien invaders called Savages. It looks like some magical crystal. Humans need high capability in order to use these Hundred so humanity made these military school to train humans for that purpose. This is where the MC and the characters in the series comes in.

From the gundam-ish weapons of the series, story that is more fan service than actual plot right to a military city base on the water that looks like Macross on water. There's even a few episode about some singer idol. In terms of concept and story there's really nothing new in Hundreds that anime fans haven't seen before.

The artwork is decent but not something new specially since the main character is your typical MC in term of character design. It's hard to set him apart of put side by side with Kira Yamato or Kirito from SAO since his hair color and look is pretty much that generic. Also Emile reminds me of Origami from Date A Live for some reason cause of her hair.

The transformation sequences when they use the Hundred are nothing new and regardless having some nice fight scenes is not groundbreaking in any way. The series feels more like a great homage to existing anime trope rather than being its own thing from the harem, alien invaders, etc.

The entire show at most is just mediocre trash at best but a very fun and entertaining trash. Yes folks despite the so and so stuff this show has I find myself greatly entertained. The character despite being cliche version of every other harem girl out there are well dubbed and the banter between them is far better than most other harem type anime I've seen.

Sure it's not going to win any awards for innovation and anime of the year. Heck maybe not even anime of the week but it's a good series I wouldn't mind adding to my already long list of anime collection. I review it for what it is and not cause its something we seen hundred of times before. A lot of folks will bite at this series cause of it unoriginality not cause it's a bad series.

The jokes is over used and the fan service is nothing that hasn't been done countless times before. Yet I find myself laughing at the jokes despite it all. Also despite being a comedy, harem theme this series does gets dark at certain points. The characters are charming and likable and the jokes are funny enough for even the casual anime fan.

Hundred is a very entertaining anime series that is enjoyable and entertaining without the heavy plot wrap in them. It does cross the line a bit on some areas but not so much that it's bad. It has a lot of average things compared to other anime but it's not that bad to tank this series as a whole. If you like Highschool DxD, Konosuba and the likes you will probably like this one too.
