Ocean's 8 Non Spoiler Movie Review

I never watched Ocean's 11 (2001) movie. I didn't watched any of the sequel movies that came after it either. Not even the Ocean's 11 movie that was shown way back in the 60's. All i know about the previous film are what I can get from the internet which isn't really much.

But I do have seen a few heist films back in the day like the Die Hard, Mission Impossible and the likes. I'm really coming into this blind as a bat. With that being said let's dive into...Ocean's 8.

Ocean's 8 is sort of a continuation and a spin off film of the Ocean's trilogy. A continuation of Ocean's 13 while at the same time trying not to be related to the Ocean's trilogy. Kind of like the Starwars Prequels I guess. While the Ocean's 11 film has an almost all male cast Ocean's 8 is an all female group.

I'd like to compliment this film for being its own thing that you don't need any prior knowledge of the first three previous Ocean's film to fully understand and enjoy what this movie has to offer. It does have some minor call backs like an item Sandra Bullocks character wore during the entirety of the film. That and a few minor stuff here and there.

Cinematography was ok specially the outfits they wore in the entire movie. Some big name clothing product placement and the likes are present in the film but not too much. If you have watched heist movies  before this is pretty much the average heist film with nothing new to add on the table. It looked good but as a heist movie it was pretty weak.

One of the key issue I have is the all female cast. I guess the film is trying to make a point by having an all girl cast but sadly it just made the film less remarkable. They could have the same result with a mix of female and male characters.

The movie should have went the extra mile and explained why they had an all girl group like maybe they need to steal something from a place that only females are allowed to go it would have sounded better story wise. Instead, they just happen to just need people for a heist and the first folks that they got that are interested are all females. I mean what are the odds.

Acting was ok although Sandra Bullocks and Cate Blanchett character sound type casted. Debbie Ocean could have been Annie Porter in Speed and you wouldn't tell the difference. Same with Cate as she still reminds me of Hela from Thor Ragnarok. I'm a big fan of both Cate and Sandra but I just feel their acting is just lacking here. Anne Hathaways performance was the best of the girls since she can be serious, quirky and bubbly when the scene calls for it.

Story wise for a most guarded item it lacks some pretty basic security measures. They didn't even bother to put a small GPS tracker on it or better yet have female security present during the heist itself. Even that issue with a magnet they just happen to know someone who knows how it works and have the magnet configuration already.

Ocean's 8 was a decent movie with a great concept but bad execution. It's like they wanted to ride the popularity of the Ocean's franchise without really thinking the story through. It's a good popcorn movie if you want to spend the time but if you want a heist movie with better plot and higher stakes then you are better off watching something else.
