I'm
going to be completely honest with you
guys Im probably one of those guys who hated this movie. I really do feel we didn't
need a Solo movie and seeing Alden playing as Han in the Solo trailers doesn't
exactly excite me at all. He clearly doesn't have the charisma Harrison Ford
had which is pretty much iconic for the character. But I am a big Starwars fan
and Id probably watch this anyways if not for the purpose of comparing it to
other Starwars movies that came before it...that and maybe because I want to
make this movie review.
With
the issues of this film changing directors midway into production and
re shooting 70% of the film I was really expecting a disaster of a film going in. Usually
re shooting would improve a film but most of the time it doesn't. The movie theater isn't pack as you would expect most Starwars films. The popcorn
in my hand as I take my seat is probably as nervous as I am.
Fifteen
minutes into the film and Im happy to announce the movie is way better than I
had expected. Sure it's not as grand scale as the usual Starwars film with
galactic consequences and action scenes it still feels like a Starwars film.
The story is fun and entertaining. Alden is not Harrison Ford but his own way
of portrayal of Han Solo isn't cringe worthy either. His character sort of
grows on you the more you get into the film.
The
chase scene with the falcon that is seen in the trailer, the back and forth
banter between Han and Chewy and their first meeting in the movie are two of my
favorite scenes in the movie. The film keeps you glued in from beginning to the
end with very little times of it slowing down. I like how they handled Han's
character development from a kid running wild on some planet to the smuggler
that pilots the Millennium Falcon. Donald Glover nailed the character of Lando easy.
Han, Lando and Chewy clearly are the stars of these film.
I'd
estimate the film to happen around ten to eight years before the events of
Episode IV in canon before Luke and Ben meet up with Solo in that cantina. A
good few years after the Clone Wars.
There's
a special cameo in the film that would probably confuse audiences if they only followed
the Starwars film. A cameo that hardcore fans and those that follow Starwars
both in comics and cartoon series will surely enjoy and adds a nice touch to
the film. That cameo proves the writers and directors knew their Starwars. I
for one is so glad they put that certain cameo cause it adds stakes to the film
and sets up things for a second Solo movie if they decide to make a sequel.
The
movie isn't without flaws though as some of the plot twist are predictable
specially if you been watching Starwars and these type of film for a while now.
The music fits the movie perfectly giving you that sci fi heist, blade runner
feel to it but being its own thing. Some of the side characters lack character
development as well and hadn't given enough time to shine in their own way like
Paul Bethany's character just to name one.
Overall
a fun and entertaining movie and is a nice side story to the main Starwars
timeline. A good Starwars movie specially if you consider the heavy re shoot
and change of directors and writers this film went through. Thats being said though
this movie doesn't give anything new to the table that hasn't been done before
in a Starwars film.
