One final movie to review before we head on to Starwars the Last Jedi
and that is Rogue One. I watched this movie twice in
threaters one being sponsored by SM Cinema in Mall of Asia in my Mandalorian
armor cosplay. I still enjoyed the movie despite sitting on the floor as the
cinema was packed. The second being at the 4D cinema at Greenbelt 3.
Im doing a quick review of all the Starwars movie in chronological order before
watching and doing a review of Starwars the Last Jedi. Ive already done the
review of the original trilogy and the prequels, kindly check those out as
well.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, or more commonly called Rogue One, was
shown in theaters in 2016 and was a film directed by Gareth Edwards. The screenplay by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy is from a
story by John Knoll and Gary Whitta. It was produced
by Lucasfilm and
distributed by Walt Disney Studios
Motion Pictures. It is the first
installment of the Star Wars Anthology series,
set immediately before the events of the original Star Wars film. The cast includes Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker.

Rogue One follows a group of rebels on a mission to steal the plans
for the Death Star, the Galactic Empire's superweapon. It set to have taken place between
Starwars Revenge of the Sith and Starwars a New Hope and aims to fill
in the gaps on what happened between that timeline.
Rogue One
visuals was stellar and made differently than the Starwars style that they do
and centered more on the gritty and shady side of Starwars that is in the
perspective of the soldiers that fought in this space adventure. Basically it
looked like a war drama film set in a Starwars setting. Ships are being blown,
people are dying left and right. Oddly with all this praise some cgi rendered
characters looked rushed.

Character
development side is somewhat lacking. Sadly there is just too much going and
too much characters to keep track on that there was not really much time for
characters to fully develop. We are just treated with a some dialogue
explaining a certain characters back story before being thrust into the mix of
things. In fact the only characters that has a bit more character background
are the two main protagonist and even that seem to still be lacking. Luke
Skywalker though took two to three movies to fully develop his character so Im
not expecting much in that department.

Story side of things is a bit inconsistent maybe its cause of the many reshoots they did on the film. The trailer looked so different from the final product one has to wonder how much of the film was really altered and would it make a difference to the over all feel of the movie if they kept the original scenes instead. I do like how they showed that this isnt your typical good versus evil.

This is a
war theme movie and in war even the good guys are not shy to go do some underhanded
stuff for the greater good. And this part is what makes this movie so good. Its
more grounded and thus more relatable. Its not about Sith or Jedi. Its about
common folks going the extra mile for the good of all.

There was
also the issue of certain scenes that doesnt add up and I feel wasnt necessary
at all but was not edited out namely that scene with the octopus like creature
that wasn't really explained and didnt advance the plot at all. In fact you can
just omit that scene and the whole narrative would still flow smoothly.

Overall Rogue
One is a wonderful movie that isnt about the Force. Its an excellent visual
movie with one of the best ship to ship and ground to ground battles in a
Starwars film to date. A film plagued by reshoots but still managed to bring a
well rounded movie that gives us a glimpse about the men and women in Starwars
that gave their all and more for the greater good against the evil Empire.
Despite its lack of character development being a stand alone movie in a fandom filled with movie trilogies Rogue One managed
to be entertaining and become an integral part of the Starwars timeline.
