Starwars the Force Awakens Movie Review

Finally started with the first movie of the Sequel trilogy. I was lucky to get to watch this with a cosplay group I was a part of and we went in Starwars costume. It was a late screening and some charity group happened to have been sponsoring us at that time. Good times

Star Wars The Force Awakens is a 2015 film produced, co-written and directed by J. J. Abrams. It set up as a sequel to Return of the Jedi (1983), Its the first of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. It stars Harrison FordMark HamillCarrie FisherAdam DriverDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacLupita Nyong'oAndy SerkisDomhnall GleesonAnthony DanielsPeter Mayhew, and Max von Sydow. The story takes place thirty years after Return of the Jedi and a new threat called the First Order has risen after the fall of the Galactic Empire.

On a story telling perspective Starwars the Force Awaken takes notes from the original trilogy starting of with the character of Finn who eventually runs into the character of Poe and eventually leading up to Rey. Fans arent introduced to the main character of Ray until some time into the movie itself. The same way Luke Skywalker was not shown until the droids meet up with him. Both these story parallel themselves and is an additional easter egg for fans. The concept works so well that audiences easily fall to love these characters. Although there are one or two hyped characters that has yet to shine and given enough screen time. But since this is just the first of the sequel trilogy fans might yet to see more of them in the sequels where they can be given time to shine.

The visual is impressive as this movie gets back to its roots of practical special effects and using miniatures as opposed to using cgi. Although there are some cgi elements present and its not perfect its minimal that it doesnt detracts from the enjoyment of the film.

The lightsaber fights feels more grounded and you feel the power in each blow in each swing and in the characters faces. Its one minor drawback is that the First Order grand weapon you dont exactly feel the threat in the movie despite it being vastly more powerful than a giant space station.

The cameo and the addition of some of the original cast in the feel helps bridge the gap between the original trilogy and this new sequel trilogy. Fans know that this is set in the same Starwars world they are so familiar with and had fall in love with. The move is both nostalgic and sort of a passing of the torch to new characters in a series that has enthralled fans for many years.

Starwars the Force Awaken has managed to blow a lot of peoples expectations an presented a well rounded movie despite great doubts in the series has had due to the disaster that was the Starwars Prequel trilogy. Going back to the roots in terms of effects and story telling was a good gamble. Having both new and old characters together in the film connects fans both old and new to that grand tale of space adventure of a galaxy far, far away.
