Geekatana: Jujutsu kaisen - When great animation meets Horror anime

In the realm of Jujutsu Kaisen all living beings give off negative energy, and from these negative energy give birth to monsters called Curse. And The anime follows the story of a high school student Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organization of Jujutsu Sorcerers to eliminate a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna, of whom Yuji becomes the host.  The anime is based on a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Gege Akutami.

The story draws similarity to other anime like Bleach and Yu Yu Hakusho as it deals with monsters but gives the whole eliminating monsters its own twist. The monster design is disturbing and the plot doesn’t shy away from the gore and blood when the story calls for it. Plus a creepy factor akin to the anime Parasite. Jujutsu Kaisen animation is definitely decent especially when it comes down to the action and monster busting aspect. The world building and lore is pretty interesting too. Plus it story does try to slide in a little comedy whenever it can.

The series is animated by Studio Mappa so you can expect gorgeous and very well done action sequences. With the success of Demon Slayer its surely following on its foot steps. And although organization fighting monsters has been a thing since the 80’s it still managed to run an intriguing plot.  What it probably lack in originality it makes up for the execution. Pretty much movie quality scenes for a TV series horror anime.

Narrative wise the story does slow down a bit halfway when they introduce the seniors of said monster busting secret organization who surprisingly seems a lot weaker than the supposed new freshmans. The characters are pretty cliché but still interesting enough to keep you invested in the plot. Im not trying to sound negative but is it just me or are mostly all of the girls seem to have the short end of the stick when it comes to powers. They can barely hold  their own when faced with high level monsters and all of the girls except for one have been hunting Curse monsters for more than a year if we follow the plot.

The anime plus side is definitely its scare and gore factor though as it’s a horror series that won’t pull its punches. So if you are into a horror anime with a lot of action and a decent story and characters than this is a series you should check out if you haven’t seen it already. The show doesn’t bring anything new to the horror genre but for a horror action it is good at what it does and has enough twist and character development to keep you glued to the end.
