What
do you do when you got an Isekai character that is too OP that even the main character
knows it. Isekai Cheat Magician is pretty much what the title suggest. An Isekai
anime where the main character is considered too powerful it feels like a
gameshark cheat. The idea in itself is a two sided sword at best. Also there will be a bit of spoilers in this review.
The
story involves around Taichi and Rin two childhood friends who is suddenly
drawn into this magical realm. There they suddenly have to learn how to use
magic to survive and along the way they meet up with friends and enemies as
they try to eventually learn why they are summoned to said world and get back
to their own.
The
plot is pretty much the standard Isekai plot with the catch being instead of
one protagonist you got two one being a male and a female one. Each of them
having skills and abilities that can make them pretty much a hero in their own
Isekai series. Taichi being the typical compulsive ego driven Isekai male and
Rin being the strong female lead that uses her brains to compliment her magic
skills to overcome her enemies.
It
has all the makings of a good series if it only did something different. It
falls into the "seen it done better" category. At its core it's the
typical Isekai show you probably seen a couple of times already. The fan
service, the not so harem line up despite having an all female and one male
roster. Even the magical city is the typical walled city in every fantasy Isekai
series ever.
The
character designs are the typical character Isekai fantasy archetype. Myura's the
blonde female elf wearing a green tunic, which holds a striking resemblance to
Deelit from Record of Lodoss War. The scantily clad female black mage. A still
unknown female with an armor that looks more fan service than actual
protection.
And
then out of the main characters Taichi has one of the most boring uninspiring MC
adventurer get up out there. It's
basically his white school uniform just overlaid by a tribal tunic from a
Legend of Zelda game. It's always a bad sign when the female leads look better
your main characters. Seriously lancer from Fate Stay looked more heroic looking.
The
animation is decent enough although a bit choppy at times. Its like they cut a lot of
corners. It's like the studio was short on budget and sadly it shows. You just
need to check how Myura's hair move during the anime opening to see how sloppy
the animation was done. The fight scenes has enough wow factor but the frame
rate jumps does show here and there from time to time.
Also
for a show about an OP characters the fights are pretty tamed. Aside from a few
blood and decapitation only monsters have been killed so far. Even the random plot
device NPC characters that serve no purpose but to get the main characters from
story scene A to story scene B still walk away to NPC another day. Not that I'm
expecting some Guts level of violence.
Still
I guess Isekai Cheat Magician anime isn't all that bad though as there's some
plot potentials being hinted here and there that I hope will be expanded on as
the story moves along but with just six episodes which is half a season in the
series is just your standard isekai fair. I hope it goes the serious dark route
as this series does have some serious potentials which I won't spoil.
Some may view that the "cheat" part of the title is cause the main characters only have this absurd amount of magic ability that is like a high level character in a video game. And that this kind of concept has been done before many time in other Isekai series.
This is not entirely true however since Rin can create magic that is relatively unknown to said Isekai world due to her knowledge on science. One instance when she conjure up that blue flame. I just hope Taichi follows the same route in his own way.
Overall
Isekai Cheat Magician is a decent enough show for Isekai fans who wants to
another isekai series in their plate. It's sloppy in some areas and the story
moves a bit slow with the typical exposition but is still worth checking out. With
half a season in by the writing of this review It has the usual bag of goodies
you would expect from your typical isekai show and has potential to be more.
