Mortal Kombat 11 -Thoughts and Reaction

Mortal Kombat 11 had just finished its Kommunity Reveal just last January 17 and I'm pretty sure those that have seen it are pretty hyped. Mortal Kombat at its core is considered by some as one of the top tier fighting game franchises since it's first launched back in 1992. Mortal Kombat 11 blew a lot of folks away with the trailer reveal last December and with the Kommunity reveal we got a lot more to talk about.

So I'm going to try and breakdown what we know so far about the game thus far and what we know of the game based on the previous MK game. So possible spoilers ahead. Also being on the topic of Mortal Kombat this article will contain some scenes of blood and gore so turn back if this offends you in any way.

With somewhat a mix of the frenzy button combo of a Capcom fighting game with that of the hyper realistic 3d of Tekken Mortal Kombat has since developed into its own. Players was treated with decapitation and gore never before seen in fighting game and soaking worthy of at least five horror films.

Coming off from the success of Injustice 2 and Mortal Kombat X back in 2015, the folks NetherRealm Studio are back with Mortal Kombat 11. The very first reveal for which was during a surprise trailer during the Game Awards last December upon which folks saw Raiden and Sub-Zero fighting it out. There was little information released after that but MK fans was hyped.

The reveal trailer last December did reveal Raiden using red lightning hinting that he has somewhat embraced a darker path specially since Raiden's ending in Mortal Kombat X sees him vowing revenge against the elder gods who he claims have betrayed him and earth realm.

The graphics for Mortal Kombat 11 is impressive even compared to the previous MK title. While the previous MK game was already visually impressive on its own the character seems too bright compared to the background making them look disconnected from the stages they are fighting on. Now it's more lifelike and the faces are more impressive and doesn't look like wax dolls.

The character textures has greatly improved making the characters in the game itself more real. Blood, sweat, water reflect to near perfection over each character. Seeing how the light reflects off each of the character, how eah metallic weapon or armor shines is pure eye candy. The folks at NetherRealm Studio keep raising the bar in quality with every new game release.

They show a bit of the story of Mortal Kombat 11 story  with a angry Raiden torturing Shinnoc who was one of the main antagonist in the previous game. As Raiden leaves we see Kronika who seems to be an elder goddess capable of bending time to her will. She seems to be rather upset at Raiden for foiling her plans more than once.

This does not only put Kronika an antagonist for Mortal Kombat 11 but it also means that she has been pulling the strings behind Mortal Kombat since the very beginning. Also with her power to manipulate time there's a high possibility that we will see characters who has long since been gone in the past return.

Much of the gameplay mechanics was carried over from MK X such as the ability to choose three character variant for each character in the game. The ability to fully customize your character is a welcome addition. The ability to choose what type of mask, armor or outfit your character wear gives player a sense of personality specially during online play.

The more notable changes are two power meters at the lower part of the screen as opposed to the usual one single meter in previous MK games. The vertical meter for offense special attacks and the horizontal meter defensive moves. Each charges and drains separately depending on which skills you use.

There's also a new gameplay mechanic called the perfect block which allows a player to counter an attack. Add in a Fatal Blow mechanic that is sort of a desperation move a character can use when said character is at low health to turn the tables in their favor. Throw in a whole new set of Fatalities for all the character for players to discover.

The Mortal Kombat X roster is a whooping 25 roster list. Not much of the roster has been revealed playable yet except for the six that was shown in the mid January 2019  reveal and these are: Raiden, Scorpion, Baraka, Skarlet, Sub-Zero, Sonia Blade and the new character Geras who can manipulate sand and turn them into hammers and other deadly weapons.

Some other characters such as Cassie Cage, Kung Lao and Liu Kang, Kabal, Rain and Kitana are shown in either the teaser cinematic, leaked photos and partially mentioned or quickly teased in other Mortal Kombat X related sites in the internet but it's still anyone's guess which ones will make it as a playable character.

Personally I like to see Noob Saibot make a return as his moves are best when you want to play mind tricks on your opponent. The character is very tricky to predict when you're going up against the character. Who knows. A guy can dream right?

Mortal Kombat 11 is scheduled to be release on April 23 this year. it will be released on the PS4, Xbox One, the PC, and also on the Nintendo Switch. Those that Pre-ordering the game gets access to a beta in March and allows you to play as Shao Kahn.
