Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - An entertaining movie for kids and Sonic fans alike

A film based on the video game series published by Sega, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is the sequel to the movie Sonic the Hedgehog and stars Ben SchwartzJim CarreyJames MarsdenTika Sumpter and  Idris Elba.

The film follows Sonic who following the events of the first film wants to prove he has the makings of a hero, his big test comes when the evil Doctor Robotnik returns, alongside his new sidekick, Knuckles the Echidna, in search from the Master Emerald. Sonic team-ups with Tails to find the Emerald before it falls into the wrong hands.

Making a movie out of a beloved video game is already a hit and miss. Making a sequel work to said video game movie makes it harder but for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 it seems to work. The film is ridiculously entertaining and in some points for me even surpasses the original film thanks to a competent enough script that feels more of a world spanning adventure than a story adaptation of a video game. In fact you really don’t need to play the game to know whats going on as everything is clearly explained in the film itself.

It had well done action sequences, surprisingly great visuals. And this is a great feat since very few video game based movies made any decent sequels. I’m not sure how accurate the plot is to the game but it manages to weave much of the lore of the game into a believable action adventure film that makes the characters real. I do love that the film takes well executed jab and references other superhero characters and things as well adding to the humor of the movie without it sounding forced and overly cheesy.

I love the humor, animated characters, and the cast's performances. Jim Carrey as Doctor Ivo Robotnik once again nails it with his over the top character portrayal. Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog is also once again favorite voice performance. Sonic being the impulsive character and Tails voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey who I didn’t know was a girls voice until I did the research for this review.

But the icing on the cake is definitely Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna as his line delivery of the dry humor yet at the same time menacing serious voice of Knuckles was really fun to watch. Alongside Jim Carrey as Robotnik watching these three animated characters banter is one of my favorite parts of the film for me.

The pacing, screenplay does feel a bit work. For one I don’t think that wedding scene was necessary despite giving a few good laughs. They could have replaced that with something more meaningful. That dancing sequence in that snow cabin definitely could have been done differently. Still that’s probably me cherry picking little tidbits in an otherwise already ok movie. The movie is a fast-paced, family-friendly video-game-movie sequel with a mountain of humor and silliness and it wears that with pride. Its definitely for kids and those fan of the games.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a surprisingly decent sequel in a film world where sequel to video game movies are often done badly. Sure this movie is mostly for kids and fans of the games but it doesn’t mean new fans wouldn’t enjoy it. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has the charm and humor while somewhat being somewhat true to the video game source material. If you like video game based movies and a Sonic fan you might want to check this out….specially if you have seen the first Sonic film.
