Ms Marvel - A Disney and Marvels superhero series geared for younger viewers

Ms Marvel is an American television miniseries created by Bisha K. Ali for the streaming service Disney+, based on the Marvel Comics featuring the character Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel.  It follows Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old fangirl of the Avengers who struggles to fit in until she gains her own powers.  It is the seventh television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) produced by Marvel Studios. It shows continuity with the other movies and tv series in the MCU.

Im not really familiar with Ms Marvel aside from seeing her as a playable character in that Marvel LEGO game years back. All I know by the looks in that game is that shes basically like Mister Fantastic in the way her powers look. In any case lets go on with the review. Also minor spoiler flag is up.

The series is pretty decent specially the first two episode that is until they dive into Muslim references and that’s where it’s a bit hard to follow for me since that’s new territory. Also the show is definitely made for kids with the use of vibrant colors and a more slice of life approach rather than the superhero high stakes world ending political conspiracies that most Marvel fans are probably used to right now. I could see why a lot of fans doesn’t jump into it as they do the MCU films and previous tv series.

Iman Vellani does her role justice and she makes for a really likable Kamala Khan. She gives the fan girl aspect for someone living in a community that isn’t into superhero growing up feels like. Sadly the rest feels like your high school drama most of the time. The creative visual style they use feels like a live action version of the movie Into the Spider-verse. Oddly unlike the spider verse film this series lacks the iconic characters aside from Ms Marvel to make it more entertaining.

You definitely feel that the show has a tv budget the way they did most of the scene as most of the characters feel like they came from a tv drama talking about Kamala’s school life and her Muslim heritage than doing superhero stuff. Personally Id prefer a more Spider man like story origin with more hero stuff than kamala worrying about her grades and if she can get home from school in time. Missed opportunity really considering what her character can do in that LEGO Marvel game with the proper set up.

The special effects was nice during action scenes although we mostly got it towards the later half of the series but its bogged down by a slow story pacing and a so so villain. It is definitely not bad but it could certainly could have been tons better. Still the ending does set up a lot of interesting possibilities in the show mostly more well loved characters possible appearing into the MCU in the future. Wished they did better on the other costumes cause Ms Marvel is probably the most decent looking costume suit development and we still didn’t get the iconic one until much later in the series.

Overall Ms Marvel is a good for tv series centered for kids that could definitely could have been done better. Its not bad but it certainly leaves a lot to be desired mostly in the story and action department. Aside from a few easter eggs and supposed story implication there is nothing in it outside of a kamala/Ms Marvel origin story. its definitely more Disney series than a Marvel series. If you want more MCU content and want something geared towards kids and teenagers than you should give this one a once over.
