Geekatana Review - Gundam Marsfour - An Almost Perfect Gunpla

Gundam Marsfour is a gunpla that appeared in Gundam series Gundam Build Divers Re: RISE which is the direct sequel to Gundam Build Divers series back in 2018. This gundam is the first Planet System armor to be shown aside from the Core Gundam. The gundam is piloted by Horoto Kuga, one of the main protagonist in the series.

This will be my first gunpla review for this Blog and I hope you will excuse me if I miss certain things. Hopefully I can make more similar reviews like this in the future.

Marsfour is one of the many PLANET System Armor of the Core Gundam. So far at least 4 other PLANET armor system has been shown with each Armor type representing planets of the solar system with Mars being the fourth planet as the name Marsfour was coined.

CORE GUNDAM

The Core gundam that is the center of the gunpla itself. It's basically a tiny little gundam that is the foundation of the Planet System gimmick of this gunpla. The core gundam of the Marsfour comes in real type color, The real type color was the original color of the RX78 gundam before bandai decided to settle with the white blue and red color that it has now. It also has a tiny belt skirt.

The core gundam is a head or two shorter than your standard 1/144 kit and is approximately the same size as those SD kits but with the core gundam having a more realistic proportion than the SD ones and more articulated. So in a sense the best of both worlds as an SD size HG 1/144 gunpla. Sure the Core gundam looks bit weird but this is the only gunpla of this size that isn't an SD kit and that in itself is something else.

Interesting enough this kit has minimal stickers and everything is just plastic color separation. The stickers are just for the eyes, forehead and back camera and the scope for the gun and a tiny one for the core flyer. Sadly due to the nature of the Core gundam it has a strange way of holding the shield as it plugs at the buttom part of the hand. But this was done all for the Core gundams. You will understand once you see it wear the Marsfour armor why this is the case for the changes.

CORE GUNDAM ARTICULATION

For articulation the Core gundam has an impressive range of arm and leg articulation for its size. It doesn't have a full bend at an elbow and leg however but what is have is enough to make a good number of poses. It is not as great as those full articulated kits like the Try Burning Gundam but its surprisingly better than I expected specially for its tiny size.

Also the shoulder articulation of the Marsfour Gundam is a lot better in Core Gundam mode since the Mars Armour doesn't impede the shoulder anymore so you can get that full 190 degrees upward arm movement. Also since its part of the armor docking procedure the Core gundam foot can go backwards is a super crazy way.

When not docked to the Core Gundam the Marsfour armor is a little craft that the gundam itself can ride on much like how the Justice Gundam can ride its backpack. In the anime it acts as a transport and a support unit for the Core gundam

MARSFOUR ARMOR

Marsfour armor can detach from the Core Flier and turn into the Core Gundams Armor. The Marsfour is melee type armor system as a lot of its parts from the shoulder armor and the feet has claws and spikes protruding from it giving it a more savage spiky look. The red colors does remind me of other melee based gunpla like the Try Burning gundam just to name one. Also like God Gundam and Star Burning the Marsfour has a pair of claws attached to the pair of shield that the Marsfour armor has. Add that to the Core Gundam small shield for a total of three shields in total.

The only issue is the pair of black things at the back of the armor which is the Core gundams legs sticking out but thats a minor flaw considering the PLANET System gimik this kits has which is a cross between those combining robots and a cute little SD like gundam. Also the holes and pegs are pretty much standard 1/144 pegs to you can attach almost any weapon or backpack on this kit so making the Marsfour gundam a custom friendly kit.

ACCESSORIES

For accessories you get the Core Spray gun, a two pairs of beam effect parts for the two beam handles that is attached on the gunplas backpack which has two pegs and the standard 2 mm holes that can fit a variety of HG weapon and backpack options. The beam effects comes in a pair of short and long beam effect parts so you get a pair of beam swords and beam daggers for this kit.

There's also a small stand for the Core Flier to attach into.

MARSFOUR ARTICULATION

Since the Marsfour is basically just the Core Gundam with an armor attachment you can expect pretty much the same articulation from the Marsfour. The only issue however is since the shoulder armor is a bit massive you can no longer have the 180 degrees arm motion and have more or less a 90 degrees one instead specially since you got that shield claw gimmick going on. Still that is the only minor difference on how good this kit can get. You can pull off some crazy action poses with this kit.

Also I like to add since this kit has no balancing issue since it doesn't have a heavy backpack attached to it. So you can pull off some really sweet poses and would definitely go well with any other gunpla you got in your collection. The positive is also its downside though as the weapon pack this kit supposed to have in the anime is sold separately making the kit feel somewhat incomplete and not so anime accurate to the show itself.

THE BUILD

Gundam Marfour is a fun build. basically you make a tiny Core gundam that is pretty much a cute SD kit size with great articulation. Then you build the PLANET armor kit around it. Some tiny parts that can be a bit of a challenge for new builders but nothing too hard. Both new and old gunpla builders will have little trouble with building the kit.

THE NEGATIVES

Since the Gundam Marsfour is basically a Core gundam with armor attachment a lot of the parts are small and so are the pegs connecting them. If you are not careful you can pull them off easily or worst even break them. Also the spiky nature of the kit makes posing a bit hard. I also would like if this kit came with an open hand option. Other than that this is a surprisingly decent gunpla.

THE VERDICT

So should you buy this kit? Well it depends on your preference. The kit is solid enough as it is but if you can afford it I'd suggest getting the Marsfour weapon option kit that is sold separately as this kit feels lacking. The Marsfour is still a modest kit to get if you don't mind its shortcomings in terms of weapons.
