Geekatana Movie Review: The Secret Life of Pets (2016)

Before I do a review of movie the Secret Life of Pets 2 I've decided to do a quick review of the first film that came before it. The year 2016 was a roller-coaster of a year specially when you know that the all girls Ghostbuster reboot came in the same July month this film was shown in theaters so this movie flew right pass me.

But enough with talking about that and let us just dive into the review since I still have to do a review of the second film after this one.

The story of the Secret Life of pets centers around Max a terrier who's perfect quiet life turned upside down when his owner decided to adopt a big sloppy mongrel dog named Duke. The two dogs don't get along and chaos and crazy adventures ensures as other pets in the neighborhood and all over Brooklyn gets involved.

The plot is surprisingly good for a movie of this caliber. Sure the plot twist is predictable and the ending is the typical kind but how the movie got from point A to point B is all the fun. There is clearly not a dull moment and the film gives enough break time in between high adventure to another for the story to breath and mature.

The characters are all fun quirky in its one way the only issue is this film has a lot of animals in it that its hard to keep track of all the names so you end up with "Oh it's that cat, that dog again." specially the number of dogs and cats they got in this film. Seriously you be surprise how scarily funny a hawk and a white bunny can be in this movie.

The movie was hilarious, cute, exciting and it even tugs at the heartstrings from time to time. The movie jumps from either Max and Duke or the other animals as they mount a rescue mission. Oh and there is also a white bunny trying to get revenge on all pet owners all over the city. It's a really insane set up.

This movie is an hour and a half long give or take and by the end of the film I end up wanting more since the film really does make use of every minute of the movie to tell the full story. Some of the scene felt forced but you won't mind cause it's just funny as heck. This is from the folks that made Despicable Me so its bound to be full of laughs.

Some of the music they used on the movie is ok some just feels a bit off but that's a minor complain for how well this film is made. It's not going to win any film awards but its a higly entertaining film just the same. Watch out for Despicable Me references and cameo. Also there's a mid credit scene on this one.

The Secret Life of Pets was made clearly with kids and pet lovers in mind. If you ever own a pet you will love this film. This is a movie I'd even recommend for those that don't have pets. It's a feel good movie for everyone to enjoy be it you're a kid or an adult.
