Geekatana Movie Review: Spider-man Into the Spider-verse

There's been more than five Spider-man films to date. And although the past Spider-man films has been a hit or miss it has yet to struck it big in its animated film department. And knowing the Spider-man Into the Spider-verse is being done by Sony isn't exactly as thrilling as it sounds. Let's face it Sony isn't exactly have a consistently good record in their animated films lately specially when you remember one of their latest animated film was the Emoji movie.

The trailer for Spider-man Into the Spider-verse looks promising but as we always say great trailers doesn't really result to having great movies. So despite having high hopes I'm still rather skeptical about this film.

Spider-man Into the Spider-verse is a computer generated animated film based on Marvel characters. The story revolves around Miles Morales as he becomes the Spider-man and he is joined by other Spider-man counterparts from alternate realities as they join forces to stop a threat to all their realities.

The storyline is clearly one of the best in terms of animated superhero films as far as Marvel side of the spectrum is concern. This movie does a Spectacular (<-- pun intended) way of storytelling despite having such a huge cast of characters. This is like a superhero team origin story done right. It has the right amount of everything without being all over the place.

The visuals and animations are stunning. I can't tell if its 3d cel shaded, clay animation or all of it combined but it works and each scene is so detailed and executed that you feel its ripped out of a painting or a comic book page. Most of the time I want to have a pause button just so I can pause a scene just to admire it all.

I love how the film drops references on past Spider-man films and comics like how Spider-ham is someone out of a saturday morning cartoon and plays on this idea in itself. Those familiar with the characters will catch this parts easily and those that aren't will find them entertaining and helps flesh out these characters for those new to them.

Character wise the movie is mostly centered around Miles and yet the other characters aren't left out as everyone has their own personality in the mix and their own little quirks. You feel attached to all of them and that's a huge feat to pull off. By the end of the almost two hour film it's hard to pick favorites.

Since this is mostly a Miles Morales film so the music is more upbeat and clearly something you would hear Miles plays. Also it's a fast paced film so I'm sure those that watched it would surely want to watch it again just to catch all the stunning details this movie has to offer and maybe an easter egg reference here and there.

The only minor flaw in the film for me is that they could have given Kingpin a better back story. His motivations on why he does what he does is explained in the film I just kind of wished they showed more of it but that's a personal preference in my part.

I can't praise this movie enough since its everything I ever wanted in an animated superhero film and it blew my expectations far more than I thought it would. I'd recommend this film to anyone be it you're a longtime Marvel fan or not. If you don't know who Spider-man is this will film will get you hooked. this is like one of the best Spider-man comic book story done right and put in film.

This is almost a two hour film and you clearly don't want to miss even a minute of it so take your bathroom breaks early. Also stay at the very end of the film as there's a mid credit and after credit scene you don't ever want to miss.

Spider-man Into the Spider-verse is a must watch whether you're a fan of the character or not you will find something you will love in this film be it the animation, the characters the comedy or the story. This is clearly movie of the year material and a definite buy on Blue Ray DVD or 4k.
