Guardian of the Galaxy Holiday Special was written and directed by James Gunn for the streaming service Disney+, It’s a Action-Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy story made for the Holidays and is the second Marvel Studio Presentation under the Marvel Cinematic Universe and shares continuity with of both tv series and movies of the franchise.
The Holiday Special follows the Guardians of the galaxy as they celebrate Christmas and they search for an unlikely Christmas present for the teams leader Peter Quill. It also serves as a conclusion of Marvels Phase Four of the MCU and tying up some odd lose ends. Also minor spoilers ahead.
I love how they managed to set up a rather interesting and entertaining little Christmas adventure. Although the 45-ish minute special featured most of the Guardians Phase 4 roster it mainly focuses on both Drax and Mantis as they secretly snuck back to earth to find that special gift. The tale is much a fish out of water story of both mantis and Draz as they try to do their task and learn about human culture pretty much alien to both of them. All the while not trying too much trouble themselves. Of course that is easier said then done.
I am not a fan of both Drax and Mantis in the whole Guardian of the Galaxy team but they are surprisingly entertaining in this one. Drax having the somewhat do first ask questions later attitude bouncing off the naïve yet enthusiastic side of mantis as they traverse earths local in search for the special “Bacon” gift for their fearless leader. It also highlights how far both Dave Batista and Pom Klementiff in their portrayal of their character delivering funny one liners and some impressive action as well. I didn’t know Mantis can be so scary and intimidating.
The plot is a little goofy but that’s expected. And story mixing that right amount of comedy, plot and the typical usual feel good feeling of a Christmas Holiday story. I also like that it shines some light on the characters relationship and ability doing a nice little recap on the previous movies and answering some questions MCU fans didn’t know they were asking. I also like that Cosmos the Spacedog looks more like an actual dog this time around. The rest of the cast was also great delivering their own little thing to add to the whole comedy and plot. The Holiday Special also featured a brief cameo of Mark Hamill I believe.
The action sequences are surprisingly well done and not over the top. It is also nice to see Mantis doing some swings, flips and kicks. I also like that it showed how Drax handles a couple of bullet shots which is a nice surprise to me personally. I am so glad Feigi finally gave the greenlight for this Holiday Special to James Gunn as I recall this was a thing that was planned way back in 2021. The show is often goofy and funny yet at the same time really heartfelt and sincere.
The music in the Guardians of the galaxy Holiday Special about Santa Claus is great too as it sets up the tone the episode is going for being a whole misinterpretation of Christmas in really comedic fashion. Also timeline wise this show is after Thor Love and Thunder and before Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 film so it probably has some small details here and there that might be important going into Volume 3.
So folks might want to give this show a look before diving headlong into the MCU Phase 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is a funny, goofy and somewhat cordial tale that Id easily recommend to any MCU fan be it you are a fan of the Guardians or not. It has enough story and plot for both kids and adults can enjoy. The music is great and the ending definitely is worth it.
