Geekatana Review - Frozen (2013)

Frozen is a 2013 a musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures.[5] The 53rd Disney animated feature film, it is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Snow Queen"

Originally I was supposed to do a review of Frozen 2 but decided to put it off for a few days so I can do a review of the first film just so I can compare them. So please bare with me as I give my two cents on this movie before we dive into Frozen 2.

Frozen (2013) tells the story of princess Anna who sets off on a journey alongside a rugged iceman, his loyal reindeer, and a naive snowman to find her estranged sister Elsa, whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped their kingdom in eternal winter.

As a story Frozen two is pretty decent even if it took such liberty from the original source material it was originally based. For one the supposed evil ice Queen is no longer evil and a lot of other things. Also being a musical fantasy the number of songs can be a bit too overwhelming. Disney has been known to put songs in their films but Frozen has a bit too much of that I think. Thankfully nearly all of the songs are surprisingly catchy.

Frozen (2013) plot twist villain at the end of the film did catch me off guard which is a good thing. And I like how Disney finally took their usual story formula for a loop and thinking out of the box for once. Sadly as villains go this one is probably the least impressive and underused antagonist in Walt Disneys history of villains. Gaston or Scar from the Lion King was more of a menace. They could have gave said antagonist some magical powers or something to make the bad guy more of an actual threat.

The animation was pretty decent specially during the third act specially when there is lots of ice and snow involved which is pretty abundant in the film thankfully. I wished some scenes was a bit longer and some scenes were shortened in some areas but I'm guessing the one hour and thirty minutes of the film was long enough already.

The movie is far from perfect as story also have some pacing issues and there are some drop in animation quality in some scenes but overall the film is pretty entertaining. Some of the jokes didn't land for me as much as I'd like. Some scenes in the third act was confusing. I mean frozen objects breaks when hit by a hard object...like say a very sharp sword. The movie Terminator 2 showed as much.  The same sword that mind you cut a giant ice thing a few scenes earlier which is at least ten times bigger.

Still overall Frozen (2013) was surprisingly good despite its obvious flaws. The songs are catchy the animation is pretty and I think a lot of folks should watch this film at least once if they haven't watched it already. But who am I kidding there's probably very few people on the planet who hasn't seen this film by now. It's a good film to watch if you want to be entertained and have a good laugh or two.
