Me and my sister went to
watch Captain Marvel on opening day after work. We were hoping to buy tickets
after we got off that day but we were surprised that all seats were taken right
up to the 11 pm last screening. First time I seen a movie that had this much
folks watching and it's not even the weekends yet. We had to settle for
front row seats just so we can watch the film early, two of only five seats
available. And we barely made the 7 15 screening time as we got our tickets at
around 7:05 pm. The entire experience was a first of many thing.
Safe to say there's a lot
of stuff riding on in this movie as this film does not only connect to the
Avengers End game but is probably the first movie with a female lead character
in a Marvel film ever. There's also some controversy about Brie and the film
itself.
The film
was about Carol Danvers a female with cosmic level powers on par with
the likes of Thor. It was produced by Marvel Studios and
distributed by Walt Disney Studios
Motion Pictures, it is the twenty-first
film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It's written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet also contributing to the screenplay. It
stars Brie Larson stars
as Danvers, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.
The film
is set in 1995, the story follows Danvers as she becomes Captain Marvel after the Earth is caught in the center of a
galactic conflict between two alien worlds.
As a
story I find the film very entertaining and surprisingly good. The trailer
didn't give this movie justice. The film is surprisingly funny, entertaining,
action pact and has a heart. The film does changes a lot of stuff than what the
comic source material was. One example is the cat we all saw in the trailer being
named Goose as being named Chewy in the comics. Also I want to have a cat just like Chewy.
The
changes adds to that sense of excitement since you really won't expect who is
who in the film as the film has that spy versus spy of lies and deception
interwoven into the narrative. The story is nothing new but the way they
handled it was so refreshing that I already found myself wanting to see the
film again even if I've only at the second act of the film.
There's a
lot of issue of Brie not being able to smile or her character being lame but there's
nothing of that on the film. She is Captain Marvel and she nails the role
surprisingly well than I had expected. I might get some hate on this one but
for me she is Captain Marvel as Downy is Ironman.
The rest
of the characters did an excellent job specially Samuel L Jackson and Jude Law.
The back and forth banter between Fury and Carol is one of the best parts of
the film that and the whole third act. I like how well they connect this film
to the Avengers MCU that it feels like an Avengers MCU origin story as it is a
Captain Marvel origin.
The
visuals was fantastic from the opening sortie of Carol right to the final third
act. Although there's one scene where Carol kicks an enemy and you can feel its wire work but its only for a few seconds. Aside from that the rest of the fight scenes was really
well done and I'm glad they put a lot of melee scenes in the film than just Carol
blasting every enemy she comes across. Hats off to the fight choreographer for
the excellent job.
They also
changed Captain Marvels origin story that makes her part of the world. Fans of
the MCU film will see a lot of easter eggs on this one. The film also uses a lot of 80's songs that
compliments the movie surprisingly well. I wasn't sure the MCU needed a Captain
Marvel movie but I'm so glad they did.
Brie Larson might have personnel issues in regards to racism and the likes that might offend a lot of folks these past few days but the film was a solid entertainment movie and a welcome addition to the MCU series of films. And personally I don't let my hate or love on a certain actor or actress effect how I rate movies so I'm going to call the film as I see it.

Overall the film was a
pure entertainment ride and there's no dragging or dull moment for me from
beginning to end. A lot of the magic is due to excellent writing and dialogue
and well done fight scenes. If you have the budget is a fan of the MCU films I'd
recommend you watch this as its well worth the price of admission. Be sure to
watch for a before credit and an after credit scene...also Stan Lee cameos.
