Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015) Movie Review

With the first Hotel Transylvania review out of the way I guess it's time we move on to the sequel. For those that are still not in the know I'm trying to do a quick review of the first two Hotel Transylvania movies before the third movie hits theaters in the Philippines. Much like the first Hotel Transylvania movie this one pretty much went under the radar as well for me specially since it had some heavy competition like Starwars Force Awakens and the likes back in 2015.

Having already viewed and reviewed the first Hotel Transylvania I sort of got an idea of what to expect going in and was really anxious on what surprises they got in store for the sequel.

Hotel Transylvania 2 is the continuation of the first Hotel Transylvania movie but now Dracula has a half vampire, half human grandson and all sort of trouble and high adventure follows as they figure out how to unleash the monster side in the little boy. The movie as usual has a good mix of action, comedy and heart rolled into it thanks to excellent voice acting and dialogue.

Dracula's father Vlad and his batty group is a great addition to the movie although they didn't have enough screen time as I'd wanted. The rest of the characters specially Dracula and the rest of the gang are still as funny as they were in the first movie perhaps even more so on some scenes. It was pretty good for the most part with a few minor issues Ill discuss later on the review.

The graphics is greatly improved compared to the first one with better lighting, texture and the fog effects making the scenery much more atmospheric. It's clearly a step up from the first Hotel Transylvania movie for sure in the effects department. The music was also on par with the first one in quality.

Hotel Transylvania 2 isn't without its issues though as it sort of jumps from a movie where monsters hides from human as is the first film, to a movie where every human knows these monsters exist and they are totally ok with it. You really should be in some sort of mindset to accept the logic and pacing this movies does to fully enjoy it. The plot is somewhat predictable sadly.

Theres also the problem with the character of Jonathan who was pivotal in the plot of the first movie is reduced to some comedic relief character in the sequel. The human Jonathan who taught Dracula and the other monsters that it's ok to be friends with humans is some goofy character now. Sure it's funny but it sort of throws the first movie for a loop. Also some of the jokes didn't landed for me as it should.

Overall though Hotel Transylvania 2 was a good movie that could have easily surpassed the first one if not for its minor issues. It's certainly a treat for anyone who likes to have a good laugh with a mix of the feels. A decent sequel to a fun popcorn movie that id easily recommend to anyone who likes to have a laugh and feel emotional at the same time. If you enjoyed the first film you should definitely watch this one.
