SPOILER WARNING
Starwars
the Last Jedi is a visually compelling movie that broke a lot of expectation
with a rainbow of emotions while giving audiences a thrilling ride. The movie
had divided audiences, critics and hardcore fans of the sci fi fandom as it
dares to challenge the norms and brings folks into uncharted territory while
shattering what we know about Starwars and the Force.
Now Id like to bring up what I like about the movie. Ill be touching on some spoilers here and then so if you havent seen it yet Id suggest you go see it first before going any further. So SPOILER WARNING folks. If you dont mind being spoiled or have already seen the movie than lets continue.
The internet is abuzz with fan criticism and split reviews as to what they love and hate about it. As for me Id rather concentrate on the positive side of the spectrum. Rian Johnson gave his best and brought us a good movie and opened up a spectrum of possibilities.
Humor Me
This was
probably the only Starwars movie that blended so much humor into the mix. There was also the prequels but I'd rather not talk about that. Anyways the jokes in Starwars the Last Jedi was
there when the scene called for it and it never felt forced in any way. One
example is that scene where that rock accidentally fell off the cliff when Rey
swings too hard with the lightsaber. Sure theres probably a
thousand to one chance of that happening but its still possible. Theres those with the Porgs and others too. It was there and it
works.

Weight
of the Stakes
The stakes
feels higher this time around. Sure there was always danger in every Starwars
films but its rarely presented in all its gritty nature. In the opening space battle alone the good guys lost all of its Bombers just to take down one Dreadnought and the First Order just showed up a few minutes later into the film with an even bigger ship. They are on the run and nearly out of power to even jump to lightspeed. They are the last of the Resistance and the probability of them being wiped out is high. Heroes died in this film. Men and women from the good side got blown up a lot. And not even Poes fancy flying is going to save the day.

Broken Legend
This movie
gave us a conflicted Luke Skywalker. It showed us that a person looked up upon
by hundreds or maybe thousands of people for bringing an end to an evil
Galactic Empire isn't perfect. A character fans look into as this icon of pure good has done some stupid and crazy things that could have may well doom an entire galaxy. That a hero can make mistakes, that he can feel
hopelessness in a world that needs Hope, that he has doubts. That he isnt a
gameshark cheat one can use to win a game. This makes him more grounded, more
humane and more appealing to a lot of fans as we also makes mistakes we all regret.
New Forces at Work
The movie
tried to show us new things the Force is capable of doing. It showed us that the
Force isnt just about waving your hand and controlling people, or simply lifting rocks. It opened up to a
lot of great possibilities in the future. Will we see Ray or Kylo pull down a
space station out of orbit using the Force? Will we see someone use the Force to break a
Star Destroyer in half? We wont know for sure but the possibility is there.

The Porgs
be with You
Call them
the movies cheap way to sell more toys but you cant deny that these cute little
critters are so adorable. Its certainly a step in the right direction from the
Ewoks or that awful mind numbing Jar Jar who you just want to Force choke down
a cliff. This furry creatures play no significant part in the film aside from
being comedic relief when needed but each time they were on screen was pure
gold.
Steep Learning Curve
From Rey
searching for her past and finding meaning to her future, to Kylo conflicting
ideals and emotions, to Poe learning that not every problems solution doesnt
involve getting into an X-Wing and blowing things up and all points in between
this movie has a wave of character development. Audiences gets to know these
characters better though this movie. What makes them tick and what they are
fighting for.

Breaking
the Mold
Starwars
the Last jedi did its own thing. Its like Empire and Jedi combined into one
movie but has a lot of its own thing to make it so uniquely its own. It showed
things that are new while still retaining some of the old stuff we all love in
Starwars. It showed that the Force isnt for exclusive for the Skywalkers or
some Jedi lineage. It showed fans that the Force can be found in anyone. That
normal folks can become heroes too.
Space Battles Galore
The epic
space battle that fans have came to know
and love are a plenty in this movie. From Poes ship dodging fighters and
turning at breakneck speed, from giant size First order ship being sliced in
half in a split second. The ship to ship encounters are done so beautifully. The
camera angle is shown as ship to ship so you wont get lost in all the fighting
that is going around. Something the original trilogy is famous for.

Awesome
Visuals
From the
epic space battle at the opening of the film, to the Falcon running through the
red salt cavern in the final act of the movie I cant remember how many times my
mind look at the screen and just soak it all in. The visual in this movie is
nothing short of epic. You can tell how much detail work they put into this.
Everything is beautifully rendered and is so immersive that you sort of want to
climb on an X-Wing and just fly through it all.
Epic
Lightsaber Fight is Epic
This movie
has one of the most epic lightsaber fight scenes. It feels so well grounded and
realistic that you can feel the strength behind every swing and the impact of
every parry. Some may argue that they could have use the Force more in those scenes but
in a sword fight with that many people and that close quarters you dont have time to
wave your hand and even do a Force Push. This is just pure sword fighting with
lightsabers at its most grand yet.
